HOW COUNTING WORKS

Clear rules, consistent results

TinyWordCount applies the same simple rules every time you edit your text.

Words

Counted with your browser’s language-aware word segmentation when available, with a Unicode-aware fallback for letters and numbers.

Characters

Every Unicode character is counted, including letters, numbers, punctuation, spaces, and line breaks.

Without spaces

Counts the same characters after removing whitespace, including spaces, tabs, and line breaks.

Sentences

Separated by a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Final text without ending punctuation also counts as a sentence.

Paragraphs

Separated by one or more blank lines. A single line break within a block does not start a new paragraph.

Reading time

Estimated from the word count and selected speed. After a complete read aloud, it updates to the real playback time.

SIMPLE BY DESIGN

Count your text without breaking your flow

TinyWordCount keeps the process deliberately simple, so you can check a limit and get straight back to writing.

GOOD TO KNOW

Questions, answered simply

The counter runs locally and uses consistent, transparent rules.

Is TinyWordCount free?

Yes. The word counter is free to use and does not require an account.

Is my writing uploaded or saved?

Counting happens in your browser and text is never uploaded. Select Save to store a draft locally in that browser without signing in.

What counts as a word?

The counter uses your browser’s language-aware word segmentation when available, with a Unicode-aware fallback for older browsers.

How is reading time calculated?

The formula is: Reading time = word count ÷ words per minute × 60 seconds. Slow uses 150 WPM, Average 200 WPM, and Fast 250 WPM. Web Speech voices may run faster or slower depending on the browser, operating system, voice, language, punctuation pauses, and text segmentation. After a complete read aloud, Reading time is replaced with the real elapsed duration.
